Sharpening/Touch Up Turn Around Time?

Hey guys, what's the shop's usual turn around time for sharpening and touch ups? Is there a better guy for sharpening jobs that people use? Thanks

Depends on the job and what they are up to. Now is probably a bad time cause they are getting ready for a show, but the best way to know it to email or call the shop and see. I think many people here just touch up the edge themselves, from what I hear, it's really not that hard.

I just sharpen my own. Usually I convex the edge, then sharpening is a breeze, and takes no time to maintain.

If you don't want to learn to sharpen free hand, you can always get a fixed angle system, like the edge pro, which are pretty much idiot proof.

One tip for fixed angle's, is to put the blade in the middle when you clamp it in, or rest it on the stand. If you clamp (ie a Lansky system) or rest (edge pro) at the base of the blade, the angle when you get out toward the tip on longer knives will be all out of wack!

With my longer blades, when I used to use a clamp system (Lansky) I would move the clamp out at least to the middle of the blade, or a bit further, to keep the angle from being way to shallow toward the tip.

Thank, guys. I'm up on sharpening and own an Edgepro, so this isn't the typical "how do I sharpen" type thread. Is there a good sharpening guy some people send their Busses to instead of the shop (if you're gonna farm it out)?

Unless you are going to have some work done, most people know it only takes a few mins to sharpen it. If you are going to get something stripped and get a satin job, some may send it to Bann or Nate. I sent one to my friend here (Ankerson) cause I know him and have seen some of his work and he did it for free :D But it really saves on time and money if it's something simple like an edge. Don't get me wrong, if it's a Busse knife, they will sharpen it for free at Busse but it all depends on how busy they are and may take a bit of time. So if it's simple, I'd say try to do it yourself. If you can't put an edge on it or you are not in a hurry and would like a factory edge, contact them and I'm sure they will be more then happy to take care of it for you.
If you search, there are many threads on how to sharpen, I think Ankerson did one too...

It sounds like the touch ups may be the key concern here. If it's coating related on the touch ups I think Busse is the only way to go. Restoration is probably a shop only thing. Like others have said, sharpening/mods are available elsewhere depending on what kind of edge work you are wanting.

OK, so it sounds like third party sharpeners may be faster when the shop is busy, and the shop is best for any touch ups. Who do you guys send your knives to if the shop is busy? (For those who farm out the work)

I don't know if there is one preferred guy for sharpening. Ban and norcalblacktail are doing a lot of modding, don't know how busy they are for just sharpening. Horndog has dome sharpening, and 230grains was talking about taking on business. richardj advertises his sharpening services across many of the forums here. siguy has done a lot of sharpening for folk on the W&SS forum.

I can usually do it in a couple of days and get it headed back to you-- just depends on my work schedule. Since you have an edge pro but want someone else to do it, I assume you're wanting the edge convex instead of flat? Thinned down or keeping factory geometry?

George,

I do most everything with the shop. The prices are good and sometimes great, but the turn around time depends on the time of year you make your request.

I mainly use the shop since its their knife, and the warranty.

I recently sent a knife in to fix a mangled sharpening job I attempted on my own and I think they only had it for a day or two before letting me know it was done.

Results may vary, but much better turn around than I was expecting.:thumbup::thumbup:
