I use the shapton orange 1000 and green 2000 a lot. I have been wanting to try a “system” but am just to lazy to research and order and learn something new as the stones have been working fine. I think I could get by with just a diamond plate and the 1000 for everything if I had to. How high a grit are you going before the strop?

The unit comes with regular stones but I bought a set of diamond stones that start at 240 and go up to 1k and then I already had a couple of shapton stones a 2k and an 8k and then onto my leather strop

In this photo the sharpener is clamped down on top of a wooden base that I made, it has a riser of walnut that the hook is screwed into so when you are not using the sharpening rod or changing out stones, you can slip the rod into that hook to keep it up and out of the way of the knife.

The stones in the background are resting in a semicircle frame of wood I made for easy storage and access, the diamonds along the left side and then some splash and go type stones fill out the rest. The orange coloured one is 800 grit, the green is 1k and then a 2k shapton with the 8k on the very end.

Like the hook idea, very ingenious and simple. Have you thought of replacing the nylon guide rod bearing with a metal one, you can get them on Ali Express for next to nothing. I have read that the shapton stones are really compatible for carbon steel, i am looking at getting the 2K, but they are not cheap here, how do you find them? I got so frustrated with the angles on this sharpener, i have made my own, does not have the flip type blade holder but it is a better made unit.

thanks the hook works great and dresses up the kit
I’ll have to check that out as it probably would be a better fit
I’ll pm you where I got my shapton
Guess I can’t pm you see here for the shapton

Thanks, that was where i was looking, but with the current currency rate and shipping they are very expensive for me. Don't want to be spending money i don't have to. And don't know what is happening with my PM access, inbox is virtually empty.

This is the Ruixin stone holder guide rod and a metal bearing, with some graphite and inox oil, runs super smooth and just so quite, i can now hear the stones working.

Nice
Have you deleted the pms in your trash folder?
