I have a set of old 'Smith's Shapening Sticks' (Croc stix for those who know).

They were pretty nasty dirty, so some comet and elbow grease was put forth. They came out pretty clean.

So I mounted them up, and ran my VaporII about ten strokes each side.

Dang if there ain't a little bald patch on the back of my left hand!

Poor mans Spydy 204 kit??? (can't change angles except by eye).

I use a pocket shapener, the lansky tri-shapener, basicly a crock stick and It works great :D

Crock Sticks rock fellas!

I've had white ceramic sticks from several different makers over the years. Right now I have a set in the kitchen from a company called Steamboat Super Sharpeners. White round ceramic sticks set up at a pre-set angles basically. They keep my kitchen knives hair poppin sharp.
My Mother-in-law won't even use my kitchen knives when she visits. She says they are too sharp. :D :D

I also have a portable set of Crock Sticks in my car tool box. These things are VERY good to have around for blade edge maintanance. If one cannot afford the Sharpmaker 204, Crock Sticks are what I'd recommend.

A while ago I decided to buy my first sharpener (I became a serious knife nut in '98!) so I went looking a bit. The choice was between crocks sticks and a Sharpmaker 203. In the end I got the Sharpmaker, and I really liked the versatility and such that the kit offers. But what the sharpmaker really taught me is that ceramic does a great job of sharpening a knife!

I am making my mother 2 kitchen knives for her birthday, and my girlfriend picked up a ceramic "sharpening steel" to go with it. As long as the angle is kept pretty close, I'm sure that ceramic "steel" will do a fine job too.

I have a Lansky Crock Stick Multi-Sharpener I believe same as Will'em, and I am having a real hard time trying to justify buying a 204. I am convinced that the 204 will do all everyone says it will and more, but this thing works great.

Right now I have an edge on my Endura that will shave easily but not pop hair. I can also fillet a piece of paper with little effort.

So will a 204 sharpen $45 better than my triangle crock stick?
