Sharpening VG-10

I'm just looking for some pointers on sharpening VG-10 steel. I spent about 15 minutes last night trying to sharpen my vulcan and if anything I made areas that were already sharp, dull.

I can put a pretty good edge on an aegis but with this vulcan I can't get anywhere.

Anyone have some tips or helpful links? All I have right now is a ceramic rod and that's been working well on my other knives but the VG-10 seems a little more difficult. Do I need to invest in other sharpening tools?

Thanks for the help.

Blueblur, probably some sharpening experts would cringe at this but... I use the SOG table top sharpener to sharpen my Vulcan. (its only $20) It is set for 20 degrees so it seems to work well with many of their folders. Just a few light strokes is all it takes. After that, I use a fine ceramic rod for a few light strokes. This has kept my Vulcan very sharp and I edc this knife often so it gets a lot of use.

Thanks for the info.

ramjet, does the SOG table top sharpener allow you to adjust the angle or is it set? If it seems to work good on the vulcan I may have to try it.

I'll at least have to get a diamond rod because if you don't keep touching up the blade with the ceramic, it will get too dull and you really have to work at it.

You cannot adjust their sharpener. The angle is set for 20 degrees which works real well for my Vulcan, Tomcat 3.0, Spec Elite I, and Visionary II. I suspect that 20 degrees is the norm for their folders.
