Sharpening with a loose crock stick?

I sharpen with a crock stick like I would if I steeled it, correct? Thanks! Also, how do I clean these things?
 
Household cleanser (Comet for example) used just barely damp will work well to remove the metal residue from crock sticks. Sprinkle a fair amount of cleanser on a damp rag or paper towel and rub the stick lengthwise for a couple of minutes, rotating it to clean the entire surface. Wash off the cleanser and go sharpen a knife.
