Sharpening with Gatco

New member here. I've owned a bucks for years, but just got bit by the buck collection bug and have blown about $500 on new knives in the past month...

A couple questions regarding GATCO sharpener. What is the best angle to sharpen the newer 110's? I'm guessing 15deg (each side) on the gatco considering the literature - is this right?

Also, I have a Vanguard from the early 90's, I'm guessing it has a greater angle. Would 22 deg (each side) be more appropriate for this knife?

Thanks for any help.

 ...Hiya Al...That's the sharpener that has the angle settings down to 11 degrees per side I think...The Edge2000 thingie on Buck knives is ...I think again tho seldom...like 24 degrees included which would make the preferred setting 12 degrees. You might find your 11 degree setting is pretty darn close... ...Fergot to say Welcome to the forum. Our "main Welcome Ghuru" Chickentrax will be plowin' in shortly on the "welcome wagon" to make it official...:D :p

Hello Al and welcome to the forums! :D
I think I remember the Gatco thing being similar to the Lansky? If it isn't, this may not apply so please bear with me as I waste your time. :D
What I tell people to do is use whichever angle setting they find matches the factory angle. Since 2000 our edges have been between the range of 26 to 32 degrees included or about 13 to 18 per side.
Just because it says 11 degrees or whatever on the sharpening device, it does not mean that that is the angle you will get on your knife. On a Lansky, each component, the blade, the stone, and the top part of the clamp, each makes up one side of a triangle. If you have a wider blade, you change the degrees of that angle. Thats about all I remember from high school geometry by the way...
The main thing is, once you find the setting that is closest to the factory edge, use it every time.
I hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I assumed as much since I had seen the diagram that Matt posted on the buck website. It seems that they are all different, however, depending on the model....

thanks again and looking forward to more interesting info on this site.
