Sharpening with rod-guide system

I have a Lansky sharpening kit and have a question when sharpening curved blades.

With my Spyderco UKPK I have been putting the guide half-way along the blade and double beveling the blade. However, where the blade curves obviously the angle will vary along the curve.

Should I move the guide and rotate the blade edge so that it is always at 90deg to the stone, or is the variation in angle across the blade acceptable?

I always just left the guide in one place. I try to put it back in the same place every time I go to sharpen. That way, it's as consistent as I can make it.

The longes blade I sharpen with the Gatco is my 10" chef. This blade doesn't have much belly but I have never had a problem. I have always thought that moving the clamp and trying to blend areas would introduce more problems than any percieved problem with clamping once.

I do not think that minor variances in angle along a blade amount to any sort of problem. As long as the blade is sharp all along the edge you should be good to go.

With a rod guided system you are going to be more accurate than you can hold freehand.

I clamp the guid near the center and like the previous post I make sure I clamp in the same place and to the same depth each time. I think that is more important than insuring that the angle is 100% equal all along the blade.
