I've had old timer's tell me that you can sharpen with a toliet. Now I don't doubt it I'm just wondering if anyone does it and how well it works?

I've never tried it, but I'm sure it can be done. The porcelain is a very hard surface. Some people have also been known to use the bottom of a china plate. Same type of surface. As they say "Any port in a storm"

People take knives into the can to do the toilet paper test on them, so why not touch up the edge too!

I've touched up the edge on my Granny's MAC kitchen knives using the back of a plate before, and it does improve the edge.

I do own a set of japanese kitchen knives which, says the instruction, should only be
upkept usind the back of a porcelain plate.
I do use them since decades and it does work indeed. Remember, the bottom of a plate is NOT glazed, so it does/has "bite".
Happy sharpening

I'm thinking about finding an old chunk of porcelain and using it to sharpen my khukuri. I think it would work well as a medium/fine stone.

Did somebody mention me? (I'm pretty sure that you knew I was going to post in this thread)

But yeah, the underside of a coffee cup also works nicely.

Yea I just saw a Spyderco Sharpmaker video.

It said the circle actually keeps the blade held at a constant angle giving it a fairly even grind. Crock pots were an old time favorite sharpener.

I knew I had seen the crock pot thing somewhere.

And Timmy...yeah it was pretty obvious.

...Hey guys, remember that its porcelain, a very fine, fine grain, type of clay with no grog in it(impurities)because you can really screw up the edge badly!! Be real sure you inspect that ceramic stuff good, before you stroke that high price edge across it.

I've posted before that the only knife sharpener my grandfather ever used was the family butter churn. It has the wear marks to show it. My father has it now, and is pretty good with it. I'm next, although I'm in no hurry!

The top edge of you car window when rolled down works pretty well also.

I wouldn't let anyone see you doing it, they might try and have you committed.

There are folks who sharpen using the sidewalk or the curb, quite possible the world's biggest coarse stone.

I´ve sometimes been sharpening my knives on porcelain electrical fuses. The size is diminutive, thus you can take it with you anywhere. Works almost as good as the "Lansky dog bone".

dePaul,
I saw Papathud at the SoCal Blade Expo using a ceramic insulator from what I think was a streetlight to do about the same thing. A very ingenious lot we have here.
