Experience is wisdom and I need some laid on me.

Is there anything you guys do when using a guided sharpening system to prevent scuffing up the ricasso when you're getting close to the heel of the blade ? I've got a few spyderco's I'm about to tackle and I don't want to see that mark when I'm done. I've seen a guy on youtube use a tie wrap but wanted to check in here with the experts, Youtube has gotten me in trouble a time or two.

Bit of electrical tape or masking tape. Cover what you don't want scuffed.

I tried that but masking tape just tore but it did let me know I was too close.

I've heard Kapton tape works, but I've never used it. I just try to go slower when you get to the heel of the blade, if you think you might scratch something up.

Try to line up the plunge grind more with your stone strokes by moving the knife off to one side on your clamp bar. There is actually no need for the knife to be clamped centrally and your sharpening angle won't be affected.

When you clamp it off to one side, you can align your sharpening stroke angle perfectly with the plunge grind & heel of the knife, thereby helping to prevent damage. It also allows you to sharpen a Spyderco all the way into the heel without needing a choil.
