I got mine last night and touched the edge up on my Sharpmaker at 40 degree inclusive. It was already pretty sharp but after a few licks with the UF rods it was even sharper.

My questions is since it's a Scandi grind shoud/can I sharpen it just by laying two of my Sharpmaker stones on the back of the base as if I were using a flat stone? In all honestly I hadn't considered the grind that much or that it differed in sharpening compared to a regular micro-bevel which is what all of my other knives are.

Traditionally it is proper to lay the Scandi bevel right down on the sharpening media to avoid any sort of micro bevel. I have had good success using the Sharpmaker rods laying down on the base, but not on the bottom of the base. I use the stones in the "put the stones away position" like Sal uses on the DVD for the Pinking Shears so you can get all the way from the plunge at the ricasso out to the tip.

Now that you have created a micro bevel it will take longer to get back to a Scandi grind down to zero. Not a big deal, but if you decide to go back to the original grind, it will take time before you are actually sharpening.

With zero grind Scandi bevels, I use a leather strop to bring the edge back from sharp to razor sharp if there is no edge bevel. My leather strop is charged with green buffing compound.

Best wishes with your new knife!

Thanks for the reply. Ten to 15 licks on the UF stones surely didn't do that much to the scandi grind. After this I'll try the stones in the stowed position as you suggest
