sharpening ZDP189

I sharpened my Caly Jr ZDP using my Edge Pro. I reprofiled it to aprox. 10 degrees per side. Never really reached a burr as I usually think of a burr. I had read that ZDP doesn't burr real well. Took it to where I felt that it was as good as its gonna get.

I put a primary edge on it of around 12 degrees per side and took it through all of the stomes a 3 polishing tape ending at 8,000.

Its a hell of a sharp knife.

I do touchups on the white sharpmaker rods set at 30 degrees. Doesn't take much.

I got a small burr off mine on a Shapton 5k and put a nice mirror finish on it with a 15k. One heck of a nice edge holder!

I been stropping in on a plain leather belt I got . so far thats all I have needed to do. And its cut me 2 times now I 'm getting scared of this knife

I agree, burrs don't really seem much of a problem on this steel. Takes a hell of an edge very easily for that reason. Polishes very nicely, too.

I am so looking forward to the new line of Spyderco knives which are going to have this blade steel. I have also heard that the William Henry knife company has made a couple of knives with ZDP-189. Since I have gotten my ZDP-189 Calypso Jr with a good primary and secondary edge/bevel on it I just take my "ultra fine" stones on my Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker kit and just simply do some fine tuning on them about every other night and I don't have to do much more than that. That ZDP-189 has an edge that is really grippy. What I mean by that is that when you are cutting anything like fresh fish or game animal hides it just cuts it right open without much pressure or exerted effort. This new Calypso Jr is a winner for sure. I have personally never sharpened a blade steel similar to this at all.

Great info. Thanks, I'll try it.
