Decided to give the 17 another shot. Originally wanted to try something new but ended up wanting to trade it because I love drop points. My custom JK Scout Jr. has always been easy to sharpen with a mousepad/sandpaper method but I can't get the 17 to pop for the life of me. Any advice or methods I should try? I'd also like to keep the price for a sharpening system well system under what was paid for the knife.

Strange...I sharpen my 17 on sandpaper and it only takes a few licks to touch it up. If you're good with stones you could try one of those combo Norton stones that Jerry Fisk and Ethan use. I think they run about $20.

If the BK-17 is brand new it will take a little while to convex the edge. If you have access to a belt sander it can be done in a minute or two. If not, it really just depends on your skill level &/or ability to maintain the same angle of attack. I know I couldn't convex an edge in less than an hour until I got my Work Sharp.

The JK Scout may have already been convexed when you got it and only requires a little touch up. I know the Becker is not convexed from the factory so it will take a lot more work to get the edge reprofiled before you can sharpen it with sand paper and a mouse pad.

I use the larger 2x8 lansky diamond stone. Doesn't take much time to get a knife razor sharp using them.
