I am going to sharpen my sog tomcat for the very first time and would like some advice on the best way...

A Lansky 3 stone kit ???
Ceramic rod ???

Or any other suggestion...

I would also like to know what metal the tomcat is made of 440A or 440C and does that have any effect on the sharpening??

First of all, there is a FAQ in the knowledge base on the front page of the forum that Joe Talmadge (I hope I spelled his name correctly) that has answers to almost all the questions you could have on sharpening ... you will be doing yourself a favor by reading it. I used to swear by my Gatco (similar to the Lansky) aligner kit, but then I diiscovered DMT's diamond hones. They have a similar angle aligner that is greatly inferior to the Gatco/Lansky, but their abrasives work in the other systems ... IMHO nothing beats diamonds.
If you like the edge that your SOG had when you got it, I would recommend that you find the existing angle (by coloring the edge with a marker) and sharpen it at the same angle.
Hope this helps,
saands

I use the DMT hones with the Lansky clamp. IMO the best of both systems.

I think the Tomcat is 440A.

It seems like whenever I get my hands on something, I gotta try to improve it somehow.
I've got an Edge Pro Apex sharpening system, but found that the coarse stone didn't remove steel fast enough for me. I made a longer spacer tube, thereby adapting it to use the 4" DMT hones.
Works great for me!
