I'm tearing at a piece of steel with a bench grinder but this cant be the best way to put an edge on. What would you guys suggest.

Belt sanders put a great edge on, especially with a 600 grit belt. YOu can use files to set the bevel, then stones or lansky, edgepro or other system. Bench grinders arent that great for putting edges on stuff, too coarse and not enough control cuz the blades chatter on the wheel. Get a 1x30 POS from harbor freight and some 120 and 600 or 800 grit belts and you can sharpen anything non serrated and also do some sanding with it for handles and stuff.

Thanks, I never would have thought of that. I spent hours on the grinder and got nowhere but with the sander I did it in a couple of minutes, I did not fine tune it yet. It made it nice and smooth and even. Thanks a lot.
