My question is about knife sharpening. I have one of the old Lanksy kits from about 5 years ago and it works okay but I am looking for something better. My price range is anything less than $50.00 and I was just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions. Also more specifically, what do you think about the v angle type sharpeners?

I have an old Lansky as well, I was always very pleased with it, and still have it. It just hasn't been out of the box since I got a Spyderco Sharpmaker (the best of the "V" type sharpeners).

You may have a little trouble finding one at $50.00 or less, but get one anyway.

Get your self A 204 Sharpmaker from
http://www.cumberlandknives.com
$42.87. I got one from there, excellent service and comes with a video. Easily the best system I have ever used. It is also the most recommended system on the forums. Get one today!!!! No, I don't work for Spyderco or Cumberland knives. I just know good prices and quality products when I see them.

I've tried so many sharpeners that I've almost given up on sharpening my knives. On my lasted sharpener, a V style ceramic sharpener, the darn ceramic stick flakes apart! I can't even sharpen my Starmate because it just cuts the cheap ceramic into dust.

Well, I just ordered a Sharpmaker, so I hope I'm done wasting money on garbage sharpeners.

I've now owned two Lansky kits (one of which was the deluxe diamond kit) and I'm here to tell you the Sharpmaker 204 is the best thing on the market in your price range. This thing will sharpen anything. I use it to sharpen 2-10 knives daily to a hair popping sharpness. If you get one you won't be disappointed. Trust me

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

I have to go with the majority and say get yourself a Sharpmaker. Trust me, you wont be sorry.

I have one of the older model 203 Spyderco Sharpmakers. So far, this one beats 'em all, "hands down"...That sharpener gets my knives so SHARP, (with NO help from me, I might add), that it scares me.

I even sharpened my newly-aquired Cold Steel LTC Kurki (Thanks Kwaiken56!) so well that I can shave with it.
DISCLAIMER: (Due to its' enormous size, shaving the face/neck areas with the LTC is NOT recomended.

Or go to Wal-Mart and get a $7 Norton combo stone. Gagets are great, but so is freehand. Of course for the ultimate edge a belt sander and a buffer with a hard felt wheel and a hard cotton wheel dressed with compound will do the best job, but I guess thats a BIG bunch of gagets there!

Get the Sharpmaker.Best ive used yet....

Only one problem with the info you have been given though and that was to buy from Cumberland...

You should call 1.904.739.3438 (1SKS) and ask if the Sharpmaker is in stock ...If it is tell them the best price you found and ask them to match it..the purchase will help support bladeforums..

I only hope it's not to late...
