Hello i was curious what comes after my current stone. i use some cheap diamond stones but my higher grit ones are the extra fine and extra extra fine dmt stones. i then strop it on leather with white compound then stop it on a single sheet of newspaper on top of my strop. What finer stones should i buy? and I've been debating whether or not to buy a knives plus strop

Why do you think you need anything finer? Can you cut free hanging hair? What steels do you sharpen?

i want a finer stone just because lol and i can cut a free hanging hair sometimes, depends what im sharpening. i mainly sharpen s30v and S35vn but sometimes cts xhp. Im also getting a knife with M4 so that needs to be factored in

Just because is a good enough reason. I would suggest to make your own strop, it will be no worse than any premade strop, probably better and definately cheaper. Take some veg tanned leather, cut to size, glue to a piece of wood. Diamond or CBN sprays/compounds will sharpen any steel and are available in various micron sizes for you to experiment. There are many brands out there, I can't recommend anything since I haven't used any of them.

ZtCubster, there is a subforum called Maintenance and Tinkering where you could probably find better answers for your question. My suggestion is you to ask the mods to move it there or open a new thread in that subforum.

Regarding your particular question... what are you doing with your blades that require to sharpen them even finer?

just normal edc tasks like packages, cutting cardboard, stuff like that. I just always challenge myself to see how sharp i can get an edge lol

Look for the grit size comparison chart in the M-T-E subforum stickies. That'll give you an idea of what you have now and where you should go to get something finer. I use a combination of Spyderco SM grits down to the UF rods, then switch to strops. I go from the UF rods to a balsa strop with 2 micron diamond paste to a green CrO2 strop to hard bare leather. There's not a lot of difference in the strop grits but it's enough to be noticeable in the sharpening process.

I don't think I would buy a strop with Chromium oxide compound, especially since you've mentioned some 3-4+ % Vanadium steels -- a better choice would be to get a strop and use either diamond or CBN compounds to refine further. They can cut any steel you give them very effectively.
