1. What's the best way to sharpen a knife?(in general)

2. I have a very high angle(I'm guessing b/w 45 and 55 degrees) throwing knife, and I can't seem to get the angle right while sharpening, any suggestions?

Check out the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 at www.spyderco.com

Angles for this system are 30 and 40 degrees. The 204 also comes with an instructional video and book that explains the system step by step. ;)

My knives have never been so sharp...:D

You sure you want to sharpen it? Throwing knives are usually a real pain to sharpen...

ps...ditto the Sharpmaker...

With all my respect to SPYDERCO Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (really very versatile and easy to use sharpening device) no way I can consider it any good for the purpose you have mentioned. It has preset sharpening angles at 40 and 30 degrees. Sharpening your throwing knife with thick and obtuse edge in fact you will be forced to reprofile it to 40 degrees first. This means that you should grind the edge between sharpening area and blade’s main grind (back part of sharpening area) removing tons of steel until you will come close to very edge. Since the basic set of Sharpmaker has pretty fine hones this work could last forever. Even buying optional diamond hones you would accelerate it only slightly.

So my advice would be – get cheap coarse silicon carbide whetstone, as big as possible, to do an initial reprofiling. Then finish on each fine sharpening stone or device, for ex. Sharpmaker.
Also, be prepared to poor performance of thinned edge because so-called throwing knives are usually made of pretty soft steel. It will roll easily on impacts.

Okay, I guess I need to clarify. The throwing knife is just one of my knives.

Lobos, if you do not want to free hand, then buy the Spyderco 204 with 30 and 40 degree sharpening angles. It does an admirable job plus it is reasonably priced and easy to use. You can upgrade to the diamond rods or ultrafine rods later on if need be. I would upgrade to the diamond rods first because they shorten the whetting time when you are sharpening a dull blade. I use a Hand Ameican leather sharpener. It
puts a razor edge on a knife. That is if
you want it that sharp. Check out the
handamerican site.

Joe should be raised to sainthood for that sharpening FAQ, in my humble opinion. I couldn't even sharpen my wit until I read it. I learned more important information in that FAQ than everything else on BF combined.
