80 grit emory cloth clamped in a vise and pulled tight. Follow w/ 150 then 800 grits if you desire. You can use oil, or water as long as you make sure the cloth is wet/dry. Be sure to get cloth, not paper. I dont know if the paper will take the tension you put on the strip. I use 1" or so wide strips, and put the knife blade down so the spine in about 1/8" or so, depending on blade width, off the cloth. You actually want the edge grind line barely off the cloth. Be careful, because the grind line will get scratched if it touches the cloth. You can mask it w/ tape, or just raise it higher so it doesnt touch. Grind until there is a burr on the opposite side of the edge that you are sharpening, then switch. Then, alternate 1-3 strokes on each side until the burr is gone. I also follow up w/ a white crock stick. Cliff Stamp advises using 40 grit zirconium oxide belts hooked over a door knob, but I couldnt find them as easy. Be sure to try an old junk knife first, just to see how it works.
