The owner's manual that come with my kershaw avalanche says to use an ultra-tek sharpener (which I have never heard of, where can I get info on this?) or a sharpening steel. Is there any reason not to use a spyderco pre angled sharpener, a ceramic sharpener (ie the non pre-angled spydercos) or a whetstone?
Thanks,
Richard
PS-can I feel free to open this knife as fast as I damn well please or will that break the speedsafe/blade?

First of all--I have no clue what an Ultra-Tek sharpener is. Second--nope, no problem with using any other kind of sharpener. Third--open it as fast/often as you like. My SpeedSafes have held up very well over the years and Kershaw has a good customer service department even if it were to break. Enjoy.

ps...welcome to the forums.

In that case, what's a good, fairly inexpensive (under $35 or so), sharpener, and some sort of preset angle would be nice? I have a spyderco sharpmaker at home, but that needs to stay at home and I need something here in college. It needs to sharpen my kershaw part-serated avalanche, no more, no less. I was considering the Gatco Tri-seps but I couldn't find much info on that. What angle does it give? How abrasive is it? Any recommendations (not just a sharpener but where I can purchase the sharpener)?
Thanks,
Richard

I picked up a Lansky dogbone sharpener at Ramsey Outdoor, for $6. It works like a charm, and is triangular, so you can sharpen serrations as well.
