ive gotten to the point where im buying expensive ($100-$300) knives and i now need to sharpen some of them.

I HAVE NEVER SHARPENED A KNIFE BEFORE

i have knives with blades of everything from 1095 carbon to 440c to D2 to AUS8 to 154CM. is there one generic sharpening system that is user friendly (with GOOD directions), cheap ($60-$100), and works for all these types of steel?

any help would be much appreciated!

Moved from the General Knife discussion to maintenance ...

The Sharpmaker basic configuration without the diamond rods does fine for most sharpening needs, certainly to begin with.

For someone who has never sharpened a knife before, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is just about fool-proof, however do get the video just to be on the safe side. Personally, I'd opt for the diamond rods addition too, for those blades that have been really abused.

This sharpener can be used on small 2" pen blades, 6"-8" Bowies, 10" French Chefs knives, and large survival blades and machetes with equal results. Any steel can be sharpened, and the diamond rods will even do some work on ceramic blades (but I don't recommend trying...) ;)

About the only mistake you can make with the Sharpmaker, other than not holding the knife vertically and the edge perpendicular to the stones is using TOO MUCH PRESSURE. You only need enough pressure to keep the blade in contact with the stone. Pressing harder will NOT sharpen faster.

Another vote for the Sharpmaker. It can handle any light duty sharpening task you throw at it, even serrations. I have one and use it for touch up all the time.

Good Luck,
John
