I came across an old western on the tube this morning.Tony Franciosa was one of the actors. He demonstrated a unique sharpening method ! He walked along a wagon and held his knife against the rotating wheel to sharpen it !! He did a lot of his fighting with knives.

Was he sharpening with the edge facing the way the wheel was turning or away from the way the wheel was turning?

There are a lot of Amish folks in my area, and I have never witnessed such behavior with them. :)

I got a round sand stone bout 2 inches thick and 15 inches across got a square hole in the middle to put it on a device it is hand made.......

I got a Question guys, about japanese water stones. Im not sure that is the right topic, but whatever.

So my question is: Is it possible to reach to razor blade finish with 4000 grit. Or maybe 6000 is better?

Also what is the best grit for basic sharpening... 500 - 600 hmmm... gimme advice.

japanese waters stone grits work differently than sandpaper grits. For starting out, you cant go wrong with a 1000/6000 combo stone or something like a 800(coarse), 1200 (Med), 6000 or 8000 (fine)

Welcome to the forums, but why not just make a new thread, your question is completely unrelated to sharpening with wagon wheels!

I've seen the big sharpening wheel that Randall uses for the final hollow-grind; I haven't measured it but it has to be about three feet across. Maybe a wagon wheel isn't that different.
