I want a sharpener that will give a good factory edge. but will not take alot of metal off. And a sharpener that does not take any skill. Made in USA as well. Give me your input. :)

Spyderco sharpmaker is a pretty easy system to learn how to use. I'm not 100% sure what country the kit is manufactured in these days though.

What about if you wanted to maintain your knives edge at a 15' or 17' angle? Would that make the Sharpmaker useless?

The Sharpmaker has preset angles for the slots. One is 40 (20 each side) and the other is 30 (15 each side) so your 15 per side is there.

If i wanted to reprofile a 20' blade to 15', ill need to get the diamond hones that comes with the sharpmaker correct? And how hard would it be to use the diamond hones to reprofile the edge? Would it be hard or would it be just "straight down" with the blade like sharpening? Also anyone know how long it would take to reprofile my 20' IZULA to a 15' blade using the diamond rods that come with the sharpmaker?

I have reprofiled with my DMT Aligner and I don't have the extra course diamond stone yet (only course, fine, extra fine & extra extra fine). It is pretty easy to set the angle then grind until you reach the edge.

KME Knife Sharpener...best I've ever used and I've tried a bunch of them. Great customer service also.

2 or more hours of continous work, I recomend an edge pro or lansky for reprofiling by hand. If you learn how to not over heat the blade and use one properly a 1x30 belt sander is IMO the BEST sharpening method around, for less than 100$ you can get everything you need for it too, leather belt+compound, various grit belts 120-600 and belt cleaner for cheap cheap cheap.

I have used my DMT Aligner to maintain the edge of the Izula. Takes only 5 mins on the xtra fine stone. Has a variety of preset angles.

moengo . how does the KME sharpener compare to the edge pro if you know? i am now torn between the edge pro and the kme but just haven't heard alot about them. they look to be a little better than the edge pro but that doesn't mean they are does it.

Portable Diamond Sharpening System

A lightweight, portable, dual-grit diamond sharpener with a sliding case that serves as a handle. Featuring an interrupted surface to help avoid build-up, a Micro-Tool Sharpening Pad™ for concentrated sharpening and a fish hook groove. Case is made from ABS.

Diamond stones may be used with water or dry. Do not use a petroleum-based honing oil on your diamond stone.

Weight: 4.5 oz. (128.1 g)
$35.00

I also use the:

Diamond Pocket Sharpener

Diamond sharpener in a retractable, pen style barrel. Tapered end for serrated blades. Fish hook groove. Flat side for straight blades. Pocket clip. Portable, versatile, and durable enough for field use. Medium 400 grit.

$13.00

So I have fine, medium and corse grinding potential.

I have used these on the RC-6 and they work great. I have not used the Izula enough to sharpen it yet. I have also used it to sharpen several Buck Knives and they are RAZOR sharp using these sharpeners.

gsoldier,
I have not owned an edge pro. I have used them though and they are good. However, the KME is much easier for me to make a precise bevel on any size blade I've sharpened. This sharpener allows me to put a razor sharp edge on my knives every time. I can't imagine getting an edge sharper than what I get with the KME...and very easy to use. I have called Ron (owner) at KME on several occasions for tips on sharpening both knives and broadheads and he is so helpful, literally will not let me off the line until I get that edge razor sharp. I would highly recommend KME to you.

thanks a ton moengo. i have been struggling to make a decision between it or the edge pro. i liked that the KME came all set up for about a good amount less and you could choose whatever angle you wanted to but i haven't met anyone around to play with theirs. i guess i will just have to bite the bullet tomorrow and try it out.

ohhh one more thing did you get the broad head sharpener or just do it like the one guy on the youtube video and set your regular sharpener to the lowest setting and go?

Wish I lived close enough to you, grunt soldier, so you could borrow mine.

I bought the broadhead sharpener also, but wish now I had just purchased the knife sharpener as I've found it is all I really need.

You're going to like it for sure!!

yeah i am gonna skip the broad head sharpener after watching that video the one guy hooks his broad heads up no problem on just the sharpener. its about 60 bucks cheaper than the edge pro and looks to be smaller more portable. thanks for the replies i appreciate it. when i get it i will let you know how i like it

Something easy to use and compact is the DMT Diafold, it's awesome. I have the Coarse/Fine diafold and it keeps my blades just right. This beauty packs up easily for the trail.

And to top it off, if you are uncomfortable keeping it at the correct angle you can buy the Diafold kit which comes with a tool to angle the knife for you. I would say it was foolproof but those fools are uncanny in proving that statement false.

I received a set of the paper sharpening wheels for Christmas and have been very happy with the results and speed it puts on a knife.

gatco, but iam going to build a strop to finish. my buddy built one, and what a difference!!!
