Where can I find a 4000,5000,6000, or 8000 grit for cheap. I have a smiths tri-stone so I have 220,600, and 1000 grit, I move up to my 10000 grit I found for cheap on ebay, however I have been told that I need to move up gradually and was wondering where to find cheap stone, I was also told all I need is a 5000 grit stone than I can move onto my 10000 grit and than my dual sided strop with gray and green compound.

I'm not very familiar with smith's tri-stones, but I'm sure you could find an answer to your question over at the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment forum.

Here's the "Grand Unified Grit Chart" that Komitadjie has worked hard to put together for us:

King brand stones are quite inexpensive, but I like them quite a bit. Their 4000 grit stone is around 25$ Canadian from Lee Valley, IIRC, so that would probably a good option for you.

Norton synthetic stones might also be a good option for you. They're more expensive, though. A 4000/8000 combination stone runs around 80$.

Natural stones are not easily graded in grit.

Get a sheet of glass and some micromesh. All the grits you want and a perfectly flat backing to boot for the cost of 1 stone. Soak them in water and slap them on the glass wet. They'll stick and it's easy to change grits, just peel off.
