Just stumbled across this on cnet... kind of cool!

wolkow.jpg

Here's they're description/explanation:

A field ion microscope (FIM) image of a very sharp tungsten needle. The small round features are individual atoms. The lighter colored elongated features are traces captured as atoms moved during the imaging process (approximately 1 second).

Looks like a jelly doughnut. :D
Cool picture. Is that the very tip of the needle?

I tried to have an ion microscope image of the edge of one of my knives once. Since my edges are truly two dimensional, it couldn't be done.

In fact, I got a nasty letter from the BATF because they considered them destructive devices and if used to start an uncontrolled chain reaction in the air, could burn the atmosphere from the earth.

They wanted me to pay a $200.oo registration fee.

I think so... unfortunately, there wasn't much explanation. Being able to witness atoms in a structure is pretty cool.

that is a cool image MrPurple.Doesn't look to sharp at that magnification though. Looks like "The Blob" :D

LOL Good one Peter :)

What is and how does a field ion microscope work and is it the same as an electron microscope?

Looks like a pic of your dogs backside after he got into IG's rellish!:barf:
Mace

...so THAT'S what you're trying to blame the condition of my dog's butt on after you tried to have your way with him!:D

Lucky for you he's a gentle giant!

Is that before or after you created the internet? :D

It is cool. I didn't realize they could magnify that much.

Nope....Field Ion Microscope or not, my wife's tougue is sharper.....

Dang thats a weird looking needle!

Everyone knows Al Gore Created the internet:D

I know there was an article posted here not long ego about a microscope using something that was one atom wide at the tip very cool(this might be it not sure) I have seen Diamond Scalpels and those are bad mama jama's

DGG actually posted this a while back:I still thinks its cool.

that must be the same needle the va took blood from me with,, the last time I had it done.. still have a mark there..looks about the same size too..:D

The last I heard-a few years ago at least-the highest magnification instrument was the Scanning Tunneling High Resolution Ion Microprobe known as SHRIMP. I believe the first was in OZ and MIT had the first in the US about 15 years ago. It could image molecules. This sounds like the next generation.
