sharpest production knife

Combative Edge M1 - sharpest knife I've ever received out of the box. Face shaving sharp in N690 at I believe 18 dps. Really a nice package.

If you're going to be serious about knives, you should make sure you learn to sharpen (maybe you already know how)...then the "sharpest" out of the box production knife won't matter.

I've handled many custom and production knives and for some reason the sharpest knife that I have ever owned was a 2011 Large Annual Sebenza. I have no idea how they got it that sharp. I own many custom knives by George, Lambert, Laconico, Krein, Hinderer, etc. but this one knife was just so sharp. Surgically sharp as one could say. I've owned probably over 30 Sebenzas and no other one, even straight from Reeve has come close to this Annual.

Why does it matter? If the knife is to be used, it will dull, regardless of blade steel. Eventually it will be your sharpening skills that matter, not out of box sharpness. And if the knife is a safe queen that is never to be used, well then absolute sharpness doesn't really matter does it? I personally take very little stock in factory edges as the first thing I do with a new knife is sharpen it. There is no way a guy on a belt sander in a factory pumping out knife after knife can achieve the level of sharpness I can simply because I have the time to get anal about my edge and the factory guy just doesn't.

With that said, in terms of straight up production companies, I'd say spyderco likely comes out on top. Kershaw/ZT does a pretty good job as well, and Benchmade is starting to get better (they were previously pretty terrible sharpeners. CRK does a great job as well with their near mirror polished convex edges, but they are a bit too obtuse for my taste. Rockstead is known for their legendary sharpness, but despite them calling themselves a production company, I don't know that I would call $1,000+ hand fitted knives with exotic materials "production" knives.

My Spyderco tenacious was probably the sharpest knife I have ever gotten, sharper than the Spyderco military even.

My Rockstead Higo is, by far, the sharpest, smoothest blade I've ever used. Based on research, extremely durable when sanely used.

I see a knife out of the box as a starting point, not an end point. There is no way any company could afford to spend the time I'm going to spend sharpening a knife.

Having said that the Spyderco Endrua has to be my sharpest out of the box. To date it's also the only knife that's ever bit me.

Bark River and knives they make for other companies (like some of the Blackjack), and Spyderco have been the most consistently sharp out of the box in my experience.

I think that a knife needs to be sharp when you get it. Though I now consider myself an decent sharpener, that was not always so. It was very frustrating to me when I got a brand new knife and it would not even cut paper out of the box, and I couldn't really do anything about it. I could care less now, if fact I almost always reprofile a knife right away when I get it. With that being said, there are some companies that stand out to me as sharp of out the box.
These are all companies that I have bought at least two knives from and all came with a very nice edge. (from experience, so not an all-encompassing list)
CRK
spyderco
Kersaw
Case
Emerson knives

It's funny that you say that because my 0561 needed some touching up when I got it
Mine also. But slightly dull knives from the factory don t bother me. i always sharpen them additionally when I get them.
