Sharpfinger vs. the Clones

The original Schrade 152 Sharpfinger is one of my favorite knives. I was wondering if anyone has had the chance to compare the original 1095 steel Sharpfinger to some of it's newer clones? Here are some I've come across:

- The Imposter: Final runs of the Sharpfinger sold as 1095 steel but actually stainless

- The Heir Apparent: New Schrade’s (Taylor) 152OT: Stainless - notice on their web site there is more info on the packaging than the steel used - not a good sign

- The Rival’s Memorial: Camillus Gran'pa Sharp Hunter (GP152): 1095 Steel, delrin handles, old school sheath and limited lifetime warranty

- The Street Hunter: Rigid Max Edge Bear Foot Hunter (RG0152MX): 420 HC blacked out blade, textured Zytel handle

- The Country Cousin: Rigid Bear Tooth Hunter (RG0152): 420 HC blade, textured Zytel handle

Has anyone used any of these (or other clones) and one of the original USA 152 Sharpfingers? How do they compare?

Thanks,

Terry

Hiya Terry and welcome to our forum.

I've handled a few of the imposters, and you have listed my favorite: The Rigid bear foot. I have a bear tooth on back order. I posted my remarks on the Rigid on another thread, I'll try and find it.

Stick around: I am in the process of moving right now, and when I get settled, I will offer a slightly used Old Timer and the new Bear foot as a 'pass-around' for you guys to take them out, use and abuse them, and report back here.

A quick look at Ebay will show that there are dozens of genuine Schrade Old Timers available, many of them brand new. Some have oddball/advertising handles/blade etches, but are the real thing. Brand new for $20-30.

The last link goes to a thread I am somewhat embarassed by, but shows the lengths I will go to for the good of the forum and for research. I joined the 'United Forum' to question where the Schrade parts went that United supposedly bought at the Schrade auction.

I hope someday to live that experience down.

Three more to be mentioned are these:

-Bear MGC Upswept Palm Skinner (picture link a few threads down) US made in Jacksonville, Alabama

-Outdoor Life Small Fixed Blade Hunter FS0152C (United offering, zytel/420HC, US made)

- Tomahawk pakkawood copy (suspected Middle East manufacture?)

I have the Camillus Gran'Pa but since it isn't yet deer season here, I have not been able to give it a workout. I also have the "last of days" stainless sharpie. I could give it a try, but why? It would be absolutely the same as a 152UH, would it not? I am considering getting the Bear knife as well.

Thanks for your comments and your welcome!

I've been haunting e-bay and finally bought a sharpfinger to put away. It's one of the oddball versions with handles marked "Master Mechanic" and blade marked MM152 and USA.

I'm planning on getting the Rigid Max Edge once they become more widely available to see how it handles as my daily carry. The cutting will mostly be big cardboard boxes and strap tape to be honest but I'll be ready for an ambush or a lost moose in the warehouse if the occasion arises :).

Thanks again,

Terry
