I want to purchase a sharpening kit for general use and been looking at the Lansky Brand $30 - $80 range. Any advice on one or another, standard or diamand etc.? Thanks in advance.

Lanskys are good, but you may have problems if you try to sharpen knives with big curves to the blade, or if the blade is very thick.

Another good sharpening system is the Spyderco Sharpmaker which can sharpen a larger variety of knives and faster.

I own both of these and I prefer the Sharpmaker for general sharpening over the Lansky because it is faster and easier to use. The Lansky will work better if you are reprofiling an edge and want to remove a lot of steel.

I'd suggest getting a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and a coarse DMT diamond stone. Practice on some cheapo knives, and you should be good to go!

That's probably a good choice right there!

I don't like big sharpening set-ups like the Laynsky, for me they take the fun out of sharpening which I find to be theraputic and very satisfying knowing I got the angle right myself. I use an Arkansas Whetstone, A Gatco Ceramic Tri-Seps, and a paddle strop (for convex edges). Now all of my blades are made of easy to sharpen steels (154CM, A2, 440C). Thinking about getting some higher grade stuff, and will most likely get a diamond stone when I do.

honestly I still use my Lansky but i tossed everything but the stones and the oil, this way its light enough for me to take it one extended hikes and campouts yet still able to reprofile most knives free hand pretty easily

We do have a forum specifically for sharpening and similar activities, like modification and restoration: Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment. I moved this there.

I've ordered the Spyderco Sharpmaker and an DMT D6C stone, both under $80 including shipping thru Amazon. Thanks for your help guy's!
