Sharpmaker 204 & Chinook I

Hi guys,

I've got kind of a double barrel question:

I recently bought a Sharpmaker, and found some irregularities on the edges of some of the stones. My blade keeps getting stuck on these little "bumps", causing my downward movement to be jerky. Is this normal for these stones? Can I use just the smooth edges of these stones, or will they wear if I don't alternate between the edges?

Secondly, I have a Chinook I, which of course I would like to sharpen on my new 204. At what angle is edge on this knife ground?

Thanks for any info guys.

I think most Spydercos are ground at 40*, but I'm not sure. But congrats on your Chinook, man. I've had mine for awhile and it's a favorite, not to mention the beefiest knife I own.

Rub the edges of the two stones (same color) against each other. This will smooth out the bumps.

You will love your Chinook if you like heavy duty knives. It's been my EDC for the last 18 months.

I agree, the chinook and the cold steel X2 voyager are my everyday carry knives. As for the sharpmaker problem, I get hung up on mine also. I think it just takes some time to break the stones in. But it puts an awesome edge on my knives. Don't really know what angle to use for the chinook, I haven't had to sharpen either of mine yet, but 40 degrees sounds about right. Did'nt the book and video come with your sharpmaker?

Last I heard, factory edge was 30 degrees, so that you could sharpen it at 40 degrees and it would already be back bevelled.

As for the bumps, I'd say anything big enough that your knife is getting "stuck" -- not just that you can feel it, but your knife is actually getting stuck -- is unacceptable. I'd call up SFO and ask them about it. Mine never had that problem.
