Sharpmaker 204 Diamond Triangle Rod Question

I originally posted this on the Spyderco forum and didn't get much of a response so here goes over here.

I just received the diamond triangle rods for the sharpmaker and about all the instrucions amounted to was easy does it and don't push hard because the diamond will wear off. This is good advise and a good reminder. My question is 'Is it ok to use the corners of the rods like with the ceramic stones?' I don't want to "peel" the diamonds off by using the corners if it shouldn't be done or if this might happen. This queston relates directly to profiling the edge on hawkbill blades.

One more sharpmaker question--Do the ceramic rods ever wear out, or can they be damaged by using anything more than a gentle pressure while sharpening?

Thanks to anyone that helps out!

You need to go easy on the usage of those diamond triangles. I, too purchased them about 6 weeks ago and they are very aggressive on the blade edge. Go easy on the sharpening stroke.
As far as wear-out of the ceramic triangles, the Spyderco video states that the white ones will last a life time as they are harder than ANY steel so there is no worry there; however the brown triangle stones are, I believe, an aluminum oxide or something and although very hard and durable will eventually wear with time and after alot of use.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply...Do you use the corners of the triangles or just the flats?

Hey Gypsy, I know "professional" knife sharpners who believe their ceramics wll last the rest of their lives, you have no worry. And yes I use the edge first then the flat.

Hi Gypsy. sorry we didn't get to you on the Spyderco forum, been pretty busy of late.

We normally don't recommend the diamonds for serrations (too aggresssive), but they can be used for same. light strokes and slow speed are critical to good results. I would still finish serrations on the corner of the white stone.

The diamonds will last a long time if properly used (light strokes). The gray/brown stones are opened celled and friable (sp?) and will eventually wear, but many years are needed to wear them out.

White stones will be around long afer the Pyramids have crumbled.

I've sharpened over 10K knives on my sharpmaker at the gun clubs over the years.

I recently replaced the course stones this year.

The white fine ceramics look new.

I needa pair of the diamond rods, Sal can you assist?

Thanks
