Sharpmaker 204 Question - Help Needed

I have enjoyed my Sharpmaker and have had really good results in sharpening plain edge knives. For some reason, I have been unable to get a really sharp edge on my SpyderEdge knives. I have been using the corners of the white stones and doing a 3 to 1 ratio with even, moderate pressure. It looks like I am getting a wire edge on the serrated side that I cannot get to come off or flip over to the opposite side. I have also tried stropping using a leather strop and cardboard in an effort to remove the wire with no luck. I have tried sharpening my Delica w/ G2 steel and my Standard with ATS-55 and have the above problem with both knives.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I can suggest a number of things that may help here.

1. Make sure the sticks are set to 20 degrees
2. Are the sticks 'loaded' with steel? Get a scotch pad and some abrasive pan cleaner and scrub those sticks! The corners load up in mins and then don't work well
3. Try 4/1 4/1, that works best for me.
4. Work slowly and make sure all the serrations get a good inch of down the stick.
5. Use a very light hand.
6. Run the blade from the tip towards the stick once every four or five times. In other words push the blade away from you as you push it down. This makes sure that all the serrations get a good pass.
7. Use a white stone free hand at 2 degrees and file the wire edge away from the flat side.
8. To get the very fine tips needle sharp, use step 4 from time to time only 2/1 it will sharpen the promiment 'high' tips of the serrations. They are otherwise quite hard to do, often requireing a lot of sharpening as above or doing them one at a time.
9. ONLY use the WHITE stones.
I have tried the above an it all works a treat for me.

How do you set the sticks at 20 degrees? I know there are holes for 30 and 40 degrees, but i don't have a 20 degree setting.

CYA -

The 30 degree holes make a *total* angle of 30 degrees, which works out to a 15 degree angle for each side of the edge. The 40 degree holes work out to 20 degrees for each side of the edge. So when you see a post referring to a 20 degree edge angle, just use the 40 degree holes.

I am a relative newbie, General, so when I actually knew the answer to something, I just had to speak up!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to try again on the Spyderco Standard tonight and test out some of your suggestions.

General - It looks like you've used the Sharpmaker a couple of times!

Thanks for the tips.

Thomas - No, I haven't tried steeling. I will pick up a steel this weekend and try out your idea.
