Sharpmaker 204

Sal said once before that it is very difficult to say as the ceramic does not 'have' a natural grit like a natural stone.

However my experience shows me that the medium sticks are in the 600-800 range and the fine sticks are about 1200. But then that is just my humble opinion. Using the corners does change this of course, as you are applying more force rather than changing the actual grit it just works like a more gritty stone. Does that make any sense?

The Medium stone based upon the aggressive nature of the DMT diamond system (I own three different DMT products) equates to what I would call the 'fine' DMT hone.

The White 'fine' from Spyderco is similar to the 'Ultra Fine' Diamond DMT stone.

This is based upon actual material removal.

My tests have shown that Diamond products are great on high Vanadium type steels (CPM 440V etc) and finished on the Sharpmaker or a Ultra Fine Ceramic Benchstone.

On most steels the ceramic system gives a cleaner and more polished edge.

The Ultra Fine DMT does not give me as fine an edge as the step 4 with the white sticks on the sharpmaker. Perhaps my DMT stones have yet to 'break in' as some have described?

The white stone of the Sharpmaker is much finer than the green ultra fine of the DMT. DMT "stones" are course in all forms. I like them for their fast cutting but they will not give any thing near mirror edge. If you start with the coarse DMT you will need to work thru DMT grades to get the scratches down. At that point you can go to the medium sharpmaker. That is my experience. One more thing. After the initial "break in" the DMT's stay pretty consistent.
