I have decided to buy the sharpmaker as my first knife sharpener. I have several different knives to sharpen from cheap ones to m390,zdp-189, s30v, etc. What would be my best setup to cover all of these? I see several people are buying the Congress stones to supplement the sharpmaker. Thanks

You can get the diamond or CBN rods from Spyderco for your lower grit needs, (roughly 400 grit), or get the SiC Moldmasters from Congress to do the same grunt work. The 320 and 400 grit are highly recommended by Jim Ankerson and others.

On the higher end you can supplement the fine rods with the Ultra-Fine if you intend to put a high grit finish on your knives.

That should pretty much cover your needs if the Sharpmaker will be your primary tool.

I have the sharpmaker with the diamond and ultra fine rods. Covers almost all of my needs. If I need to reprofile I use my lansky kit with a few added diamond hones. I have reprofiled with the sharpmaker but even with the diamond rods it takes a while. Best to start with the lansky to get the brunt of the work out of the way then finish with the sharpmaker (15 dps bevel).

Works great this way. Then I use the 40 degree setting for the microbevel and touch ups.

Once you get the 15 dps main bevel set with something like the lansky, the sharpmaker can do the rest! I use it on all my steels, from 8cr13mov to 20cv.

When you get your Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker I very much recommend that you get all of the extra stones available for that unit. They have an Ultra-Fine, Diamond, CBN also available extra on top of the FINE & Medium stones you get when you buy the basic kit. I've had my first Sharpmaker since 1999 when they were first introduced and I use both my 204 Sharpmakers at least 4 to 6 times a week on average. So I'm no stranger to this fantastic sharpening kit. But getting those extra stones really make that kit a lot more versatile. If you don't buy anything else I would at the very least buy the Ultra-Fine stones. Even if you have to get them one set at a time you still won't regret it in the long run. Good Luck and keep us posted.
