Looking at getting my first sharpner for lower end folders and fixed blades (all under $100 each). I see that the sharpmaker comes highly recommended but that it only handles 30 and 40 degree angles on blades. I also see talk about other angles like 20 degrees etc... Is the sharpmaker univeral enough to handle knives like the Swamp Rat bandicoot, Camillus and KaBar fixed blades?

The 40 and 30 degree angles on the sharpmaker are 40 and 30 degrees total. That means 20 degrees on each side for the 40 degree slot and 15 degrees on each side for the 30 degree slot. I find that the 30 degree slot can get my knives very sharp. As for working on other knives you may have to work awhile to get the angle on the knife to match one of the sharpmakers angles. After that sharpening is a breeze.

The Sharpaker IS the tool. I use it for all my knives and it performs great. A 30° angle is suitable for good steels, otherwise the edge will be easily damaged.

OK tadnine I understand what you are saying. So you guys would recommend the sharpmaker as a great all around sharpener for a wide variety of knives?

Thats an absolute positive on the sharpmaker. One lives in my kitchen and I keep another in my pack.

I use it on everything from small pocket knives to my 12" chef.

Like tadnine said, though, the first one can take a while, after the bevel is set, re-sharpening is a snap.

ar15man,
you will find, should you purchase the sharpmaker, that in the enclosed video sal wil demonstrate how to sharpen nearly anything with ease. sharpening is NOT rocket science with the sharpmaker. you CAN sharpen anything with it, and if you want to use it like a flat stone, there is a configuration with which to do so.
