Sharpmaker + BM940-1 which angle?

So I just bought a sharpmaker and I want to put a sharper edge on my 940-1. Which angle should I use, 30 or 40? I don't want to buy a diamond stone to reprofile. Can I get the blade sharp with just this setup? It is already "sharp" but is not up to my standards like a spyderco would be from the factory.

Get the Uf ceramic stones and use them at 30 and make light strokes so you don't tempt a burr to rear it's head. That will give you a nice micro bevel.

And with SM you will need those diamond rods once your brown stones lose their bite.

30 didn't hit the edge on my out of the box 940-1. YMMV. I would try a sharpie on the edge and a couple light passes with the white stones to see what your bevel angle is.

Thanks. I have the UF rods on order. I would try to reprofile, but even with the diamond stones, that s90v will kill me to reprofile. As long as it is sharp and holds it decent I will be happy.

What Indignation said is correct. Use sharpie on the edge bevels. Then do some strokes at 30 deg on the sharpmaker. Look at the edge bevels to see where the sharpie is being removed. If it goes all the way to the edge, then you can use the sharpmaker at 30 deg. If it's only being removed at the *shoulder* of the bevels, then your bevels are greater than 30 deg. Switch to the 40 deg setting, reapply sharpie, do a few strokes, and check the bevels again. Same drill: If the sharpie is gone all the way to the edge, you can use the 40 deg setting. If not, the you likely need to use a bench stone or something like the diamond rods for the SM to bring your blade's edge to 40 deg or under. Then you can use the SM for maintenance.

Good luck!

Brian.
