Thanks to scottang1 for recommending Hoppe's No. 9 nitro powder solvent for cleaning the Sharpmaker ceramic rods. This is easier than running to a sink to use other methods.
I experimented with Hoppe's and also rubbing alcohol and the Hoppe's seems to be more effective based on the amount of black color on the cloth. It is a few dollars for 2 ounces but it only takes a drop or so to do the job. Results below show Hoppe's on the left and alcohol on the right.
Using this cleaning method in combination with light strokes I have solved my burr chasing problems. This for me is a breakthrough.
