I just finished reprofiling my Temperance to a 30 degree bevel and it took a TOTAL of 10 minutes. These things remove metal at an astounding rate. I did notice at the base of the Sharpmaker an amount of "diamond dust" that collected around the rods. I took the "used" rods and cleaned them with soap and water and tried them again, with no noticeable degradation in performance.
Great job Spyderco

Hi Dale. Thanx for the kind words. The diamonds should "cap" some, but a light touch does wonders for longevity. Pressing harder doesn't remove metal faster. The diamond can only remove metal to the depth of the diamond. Excess pressure can loosen diamonds from their bonding agent.

I glad that they are working for you. I also keep my Temp jr at 30 degrees.

Big difference between the diamond stones and ceramic, isn't there? All diamond hones tend to "break in" at the beginning. It is absolutely crucial that you fight all your instincts to push harder when you want the hones to cut faster. With diamond hones, if you start pushing hard, all you'll do is rub the diamonds right off the hones. A light touch keeps the diamonds intact and cutting.

Ummm. I'm glad I read this before I had done too many knives! I don't think I've been pushing too hard. Maybe there should be a little photocopied instruction/advice sheet included with the rods. Great product!
