Hey everyone. I've had the diamond rods on my short list for a while now and am thinking about finally ordering a set. A few reviews online mention that the 'bite' seems to wear out pretty quickly with these. Any thoughts? They are kind of pricey and I don't really wanna spring for em if they will wear out.

Thanks.

What are you wanting them for? I don't think they'd really do any better than the medium grit from what i've heard. I've taken a completely dull Mayo TNT for a member on here from being able to butter bread to being able to slice news print. And thats some hard steel! I even had to reprofile a bit. Sure, it ate up some stone, but it was worth it. Buy a good diamond stone and if you don't feel comfortable using it freehand, lean it up against the sharpmaker rods and use it as you would the sharpmaker.

Hey thanks for the tip about leaning a stone against the rods I already have! I've got a DC4 that I use freehand for my work knife. I'm still not too good at keeping an angle so I don't really freehand sharpen my nicer knives. I'll give that try.

They still won't sharpen your knife quickly, but mine are WAY faster than the medium grit stones. If you like to buy Benchmades, you basically cannot use the Sharpmaker unless you have the diamond stones (because, if you buy a Benchmade, you'll get a knife that has bevels of 70 degrees on one side and 7 degrees on the other...and I say this as someone who has the username BMFan on another forum).

If you find yourself in Williamsburg soon, you're welcome to try mine.

Funny, I thought I was the only one who did this. :o It will work, but watch the fingers!!!
