Which has better wear life,,,,, diamonds vs CBN.
I need replacement for my very old diamond triangle rods.

I have had the CBN rods since they first came out (~2013?). Still going strong. Can't say that they are any different than the diamond rods as I don't have any.

I have a well worn set of diamonds and a set of well used CBN..
I still use both. I actually only use them. Lol..
I'll cut with the CBN and finish on the diamond.
The diamonds are more like a medium rod, at this point, just a little toothier..

Some times I only use the CBN and strop. Depends on the steel.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I bought both fairly recently. The diamond rods are coarser and cut faster. The CBN leave a finer scratch pattern and remove steel somewhat more slowly, but much, much faster than the brown rods. As for the lifespan, since I only use the SharpMaker for serrations, I expect both to outlast me.

yablanowitz,

Great response, did not realize they had different removal rates.
My main usage will also be SE blades only,,,, I will purchase both.

I just used mine to take my serrated K390 Police4 from 20° to 15°. It took quite some time, but it did let me see the difference between the rods quite clearly. The biggest single factor in the longevity of these is technique. Let the rods do the work, don't try to hurry them. If you use too much pressure, it will rock the diamonds and they will cut their way out of the plating used to hold them on the surface of the steel rods. The CBN presumably will do the same although I haven't personally ruined any of those (yet).

Agree, I have been using DMT diamond plates for many years, two are from the late 1980's - early 1990's and work fine. Most people who complaining about diamonds are using way too much pressure.

I did prematurely wear out an ex coarse DMT plate attempting to flatten an old Stanley cast iron wood plane. Was impatient and pushed it hard into the plate,,, ripped out the diamonds very quickly.
