SharpMaker edge angle question

Hi Guys,

I have a delica that has a messed up edge and I got a sharpmaker for Christmas and have yet to be able to sharpen this knife. Any idea what degree angle I should be using? 30 or 40 degree? I have been using the 40 degree but it doesn't seem to be working. One edge looks to be the same as from factory but the other edge was sharpened by a knife store and seems to be diffrent then factore edge angle.

Any ideas how to correct this or should I send it into Spyderco to sharpen?

Thanks,

G35,
You didn't say if you have the video or not. If you have it, it's worth the watch. It sounds like you should bevel it at 30deg on the med. stones then use the 40deg for your edge (med then fine). You don't state the steel but I don't think the delica ever had the 440V. I don't believe that it should be too bad, but depending on it's condition it could take a little work.

Hi,

When I say messed up I mean it's dull and no matter what I do I can't seem to change that. I have spen about 4 to 6 hours trying to sharpen this knife. One side seems to get sharp then when do the other it gets dull. I have bben using the sharpmaker with the 30 degree and then going to the 40 degree and nothing seems to help.

What am I doing wrong?

How much force are you using? Sharpening is not a muscle-intensive job, too much force and you might be bending the edge.

I don't think I'm using too much force but, I'll try it with a lighter touch.

Thanks

Sometimes, but not often, Spyderco may grind the edge at an angle greater than 40-degrees. If this is the case, it would take an awful lot of time to sharpen it. You would be basically reprofiling the edge and the Sharpmaker with only ceramic stones is just too slow to be good tool for this job. One way you might be able to tell is to use a magic marker on the edge to see where the stone is taking the metal offl. If its not on the edge you won't get it sharp until its reprofiled. If this is the case send it back to Spyderco. It should have had a edge less than 40-degrees. If this is not the case than should be gettiing a good edge.

You may just want to have Spyderco sharpen it either way. The sharpmaker is best at maintaining sharp edges. Don't let it get real dull. Dull knives are not safe.

Roger,

I think you have solved the problem and answered my questions. I have tryed putting a mark on the edge and when I sharpen it never touches the mark. This is what is leading me to the edge not having the right profile.

I got the sharpmaker long after the knife was dull. You can bet once I get it sharp I will never let it get dull again. I have been using the sharpmaker to keep my other knife a CRKT M16 as sharp as it can be.

I think I will just send the knife in to Spyderco and have them sharpen and then I can maintain it with the sharpmaker.

Thanks for your help and helping me to confirm what I thought the problem was. Now I can stop wasting my time and send it in to Spyderco.

thanks
