I use sharpmaker for fast touchup of knives nostly in kitchen and its fast and foolproof method.Edge off the stone lasts little longer in my opinion but nevertheless use both. What are your experiences in quality of edge sharpmaker vs stone?what are pros and cons of both?Ill continue to use both and feel they complement each other.I also use sharpmaker sometimes to take burr off freshly sharpened blade off the stone and it gives me excellent edge too.All input welcome!

Typically I can get better edges off the Sharpmaker but it's not my preferred method due to setup time. I prefer the worksharp field Sharpener or free handing on DMT credit cards at work. Though my best benchstone is probably my economy India stone that feels like I'm sharpening on soap. I can usually get an edge start to treetop hair coming straight off that stone. If I remember correctly the finish was somewhere between a DMT fine and extra fine in appearance too so it still was is little toothy.

^That's mainly how I've used the SM or similar ceramic V-crock sharpeners. I mentioned in the other thread, I sometimes use a brown/grey ceramic following a Fine India (ANSI ~ 360 - 400), mainly to 'clean up' the edge a little bit, with a minimum number of passes. I don't want to take the 'bite' from the India Fine away, but instead just enhance it a bit. Works very well for that.

Otherwise, for the most part, I've decided most ceramics like Spyderco and others are skewed too fine in the grit spectrum for my preference anymore. I like edges with more 'viscious' bite in them, most of the time. And for me, that'll usually come somewhere in the 220 - 600 ANSI grit range. In hands-on terms, that'd include hones like DMT's XC/Coarse/Fine, up through the 'Fine' side of a SiC stone (~ 320-ish) and the Fine India (400). Any one of those, all by itself, could give me a very good working edge requiring very little tidying up afterward, and therefore a minimal sacrifice in toothy bite. I could be perfectly happy with that. :)

The edge I get just wants to bite skin and sometimes get cut when trying it out by shaving hair,it also takes hair off very easily.Sharpmaker edge is good for fast touchup but you cant really compare it to clean appexed edge of stone.I have india stone but almost never use it.I guess it works excellent on softer knives like Opinels and SAK s .Medium sil carbide or xcoarse dmt is what ive been using for long time with very good results.I hardly do any pushcutting and do not use finer grits at all.Sharpmaker is most polishing that I do.

Thats a nice version, you can fit normal stones in it,ill get sone diamond stones for sharpmaker, theres sone aftermarket ones or used to be.Sharpmaker is great for quick touchup or sharpening ,brown and white stones are too fine for the kind of edge i like but nevertheless are pretty good.
