Sharpmaker followed by DMT?

Some times at work my collegues and myself need a really sharp knife fast for insp of meat. I had been using a DMT magna glide with good results but lately knives had not been as sharp. Now I also have a sharpmaker and I back beveled the knives at 30 degrees. The result was great when I then used the magna glide with fine, xfine and xxfine. Does anyone else backbevel with a sharpmaker before DMT and would it normally be done?

Thanks

I found out that a few knives I sharpened often with my aligner kit got a really obtuse angle after a while. At first, I had really great results with the aligner but after a while the knives I sharpened often wouldn't get sharp anymore. I discovered that the bevel angles got to almost 60 degrees inclusive. I had a heck of a time reprofiling them back to 30 degrees inclusive on the edge pro.

After sharpening any knife for a while the edge geometry changes and will no longer give you the level of sharpness you require. At that time you MUST back-bevel to thin down the shoulder that has built up. After back-beveling, any preferred method of sharpening will work well, be it your DMT or just changing sides on the Sharpmaker.

you're probably right as to what happens in real life.
In theory, you could always sharpen at or around the same angle and take away an even layer of metal on the edge, in that way, the angle would stay the same

Sure, you could always do that. But although the angle stays the same, the thickness of the edge increases unless both sides of the blade are parallel to each other. You form a wider and wider wedge. If they are tapered towards the edge, as most blades are, to some degree, grinding back even the same angle will result in a thicker final edge. Unless those sides are parallel, we need to thin down the shoulder after several sharpenings. That's why Sharpmaker built in a back bevel. It's needed. It's just not needed every time we sharpen! This is why understanding blade geometry is so important. It's not just the angle of final edge we need to consider, but the thickness of the final edge as well.

Kinda a backwards way of doing it.

The aligner tool will hold a perfect angle while the SM is a semi-freehand tool and the final angle will depend greatly on the steady of your hand and your knowledge of how to move the blade through the belly. Use the aligner tool to set a starting edge then use the SM for touch-up when needed. Where you applying a microbevel with the aligner?

oops! Sorry dont know what you mean by micro bevel with aligner. Just back bevelled at 30degrees sm and then sharpened 20 degrees with the magna aligner at no 5
