Hey Guys, I am getting My forst bussekin knife soon and hope to get a busse soon as well. I have no experience with sharpening whatsoever and was wondering if the sharpmaker will work good for busse's and bussekin?

thanks I just don't want to screw up one of these expensive investments.

Well...it depends on what kind of edge you want to maintain! Personally, I like a convex edge on almost all my blades (except very thin slicers) which can be maintained by using the "mouse pad & sand paper method." You won't believe this, but the mouse pad & sand paper method requires a mouse pad and sandpaper; easy as that. I am TERRIBLE at sharpening knives...but I find that the mouse pad & sandpaper method is almost ALMOST idiot proof. If you are completely unfamiliar with this easy method of sharpening, you can easily become familiar with it over the weekend. Watch these movies HERE, and if you have any further questions...just post them here on the forum! I hope this helps bro, and good luck :)

I use a Sharpmaker on my SR-101 with hair-popping results! I swear by that thing. I will let you know how it works on INFI, my GF hinted that she found my grail for Christmas... (Ash with hand shaped pumpkin mags)
Good luck and welcome to the obsession, I cannot allow myself to call it an addiction... because I can stop at any time :).

Ya, we've all heard the i can stop at anytime deal, i said it too! that was about 46 Busse's and a couple of Chopweilers ago, good luck. ha ha.

Sharpmakers are great. It would be very difficult to mess up a knife on a Sharpmaker. It's a little small for large knives but it will still get them sharp.

Sharpmaker works great on all Busse-kin... in fact it works great on any knife IMO... unless you want to learn to convex

THanks a TON man, THose were very usefull!

Hey dubs, you got good advice above. THe sharpmaker is nice to keep em good before they get dull.....then the edge pro excels if your not good at maintenance:)

BTW, I saw what happened to both of US today.....I cant contact you even with a visitors message. Hit me up at knifehunter@comcast.net please sir:cool:

The Sharpmaker should be good for daily maintenance type sharpening. I suggest a utility stone made for lawnmower blades if you need to take a chip out or adjust the angle of the edge.
Those things have become my go-to sharpeners on chopping type blades. The rough grit is almost as fast as diamond, they last a long time, and are easily replaceable.

I can get my Ratmandu and Scrapper 5 easily hairsplitting sharp on my Sharpmaker's fine stones.

My Ratmandu is probably my sharpest knife I own - SR101 takes a hell of an edge - sharper than INFI and any other steels in my opinion.

My Sharpmaker is so effective I really have never learned to convex, and thus suck at it.

I think those videos listed above should be able to help you out. I know I feel Better. About giving it a try now?

Glad the videos helped you out!

I appreciate the nudge and do need to give it another try - I actually went through the videos about a year back and turned a Game Warden and Skinny ASH into butter knives - it was pretty bad

I just could never ever hold the blades at consistent angles, even with a sharpied edge. Once I started using the Sharpmaker I just never looked back bc it was quick, idotproof and netted consistent excellent edges overtime - even on my large Mistresses.

Maybe I will give it another shot though - cant deny the usefulness of a convex edge for many tasks...

One thing I forgot to ask. What is the advantage of a convex edge over a beveled edge?

Less friction of the convex equals smoother slicing and deeper bites/better chip throwing while chopping.

Also there is more steel behind the edge giving the edge more strength than a V at the same angle.

Sweet thanks. Don't take what I said earlier as "Fact" I havent tried it yet either and may very well screw up a blade trying it, But he sure makes it seem easy!
