Noticed this today and had a look. I don't see another thread about it.
I had my sharpmaker out on the bench and it's a nice sunny day here. The sun was right at 12:00 to the rods and when I looked down at the blade I could very clearly see how the edge was contacting the flat.
My bench is a nice setup that used to be a kitchen island so I can stand right up to it and place my hand on top of the base and look down all in a very natural feeling position and being able to see the way I was hold the blade and know that if I put in a bit of angle I'd get a flash of light.
You'd get the same effect with a desk lamp set down low if you can't sharpen near a window.
