I have a sharpmaker and use it every day for work. How long do you think the brown/ medium stones last and does the hard plastic wear with the constant pressure so the 30 and 40 degree angles are not so precise.

Average life I have experienced or been told about is around 5-10 years depending on how many knives you sharpen daily and how wear resistant the steel is you are sharpening.

The stones wear well but are prone to chipping or breaking if dropped on a hard surface. I have broken 2 stones in the last five years when they were knocked off benchtops on to a tiled kitchen floor. Human error and not a criticism of the product - wear has never been an issue.

I have used one for what I would estimate to be five years now. The brown stones were just about done......or so I thought.

I bought a Lansky eraser block and brought them back to life and am back in bidness.

I have sharpened hundreds of knives on mine. My brown stone corners are more rounded than I would like but they still perform well. I wouldn't be a bit suprised to get a few more years out of them.

The brown stones will wear, but it's not quick by any stretch. The white ones will last nearly forever. The biggest reason for needing new stones is damage. The corners chip fairly easily and if you drop one, its probably going to break. I've been using my 204 for 10 years and have no issues with wear on the plastic base. I'm on my second set of brown stones and need a new white one to replace the one I dropped. The brown stones were not worn out, but had chips on them that prevented me from using the corners.
