Sharpmaker on Busse?

Is it wise, or should you use the Spyderco Sharpmaker on Busse knives? I just dont have the knack of sharpening them yet the way described on badmojo.com.Any suggestions?
 
Busse knives have a convex edge on them. A flat stone or ceramic will remove the convex edge and replace it with a traditional V-edge. There's a lot of great articles on the Web on how to maintain the convex edge. It does involve free hand sharpening. Not something I'm very good at. I have tried some of the methods offered here and at SRKW's forum to maintaining the convex edge. As yet I have not had any success. I'm currently trying to come up with a way to do it on my Edge Pro but have also thought to buy a leather strop and give that a try. They sell a setup on the Busse Company Store. Don't let my inability to sharpen a convex edge deter you. The convex edge is one of the reasons that Busse knives are better than most knives. Convex edges aren't used by many manufacturers because they are harder to do. They are wonderful edges and from what I have heard it just requires some practice to maintain. I haven't given up on it. I suggest you give it a try, you might just have the knack that I lack.
 
thanks for the vote of confidence, I tried using my leather belt for a stop, and that helped soem but I guessif I break down and buy a good real stop it will probably work tons better. so we'll see, I'll keep tryin.
 
Go to the company store and snag a air bleeder strop. I bought one before Blade and I think it rules. It is easier and more effecive to use than the other strop I bought from Lee Valley, which is a good strop overal, but the ability to slack the air bleeder is worth the price. I hve been meaning to get my ZT SH out and hit it on the Air Bleeder with some slack in it. I can only guess at how scary it is going to leave the blade.
 
and don't sweat the V-grind the sharpmaker puts on if you use it regularly, the blade will work fine, and it's a simple matter of lightly sharpening on sandpaper and a semi-soft backing to restore the convex edge(only takes a few minutes)

I can't seem to get the hang of sharpening the factory edge so I use the sharpmaker on my natural outlaw E. I love that knife. I find that when chopping wood I have to hit it on the sharpmaker a little more to keep the edge sharp since I have turned it into a v- grind. But, as everyone knows the sharpmaker only takes a few swipes to get a knife back into action. From what I have seen it only takes a little patience and effort to get the original convex edge back. :)
 
use what ever makes it sharp. i use strops, sharpmaker, levi's...

i don't think a sharpmaker will put a flat bevel on your knife unless you can hold both the sharpmaker and the knife in a fixture.

i mean i don't think each and every stroke will be perfectly vertical to the degrees of the sharpmakers stones.

and as pointed out above, a piece of sand paper on a mouse pad will touch it up just fine followed by the Air Bleeding Strop.
