Sharpmaker-only sharpening the apex?

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, and this is happening with most of my knives. The sharpmaker is ONLY reaching the apex of the edge. Nothing else, just the very edge. I used sharpie on my Delica 4 to diagnose the problem, and noticed that the shoulder of the edge is COMPLETELY untouched on the 30 degree setting. Now, as far as I can tell, my hand motion is straight up and down, so the knife isn't being tilted any way. Any solutions are welcome. I can post a photo if needed.

That's good =) it simply means you are microbeveling it at 15 dps... unless you just want a lower angle than this, then you will have to use the sharpie method and tilt the knife on each side and train your muscle memory until you have it almost exact.

Ok, thanks for answering. So the Spyderco's apex is 15dps while the rest of the knife is at a thinner angle, which is actually a good thing.

Yes, for cutting ability it helps a ton. and the microbevel at 15 dps adds to edge stability so you don't have chipping or rolling like you may at a lower angle. Not only this, but it also makes maintenance and touch ups easy for a LONG time if you do it right... go very lightly, multiple repeated alternating passes just enough until it gets to the sharpness level you want then stop. Don't use too much pressure.

Most people have the opposite problem where the shoulders of the edge are hitting and not the apex, which is why I get a lot of knives that need reprofiling to 15 dps or less so they can hit the apex at the 20 dps setting easily. Saves them a bunch of work. Be very happy you are not in the same boat! :p

Consider yourself lucky most people have the exact opposite problem. As others have stated it just means your micro beveling at 15dps and that your angle was actually below that. Usually we have to reprofile our blades to that to hit the apex which isn't always a fun task.

And if you wanted a steeper angle and didn't want to train up some muscle memory you could prop up one side of the sharpmaker to get a different angle. You can figure out the angle with doing some math, protractor, or theirs bound to be someone who already did the math and figure out the height it has to be propped up for the angles somewhere online probably. Than you use it like normal.
