Does anyone have the same problem that I do with the sharpmaker.I sharpen a knife and I get a burr and the edge folds over making a dull knife right away is there a easy way to get rid of this! I've read all the stuff in the blade forum but nothing in detail about getting rid of the bur once you have it.Thanks for any help.

Hi neighbor I to am from Minnesota. I have run across this problem also not sure exactly how to cure this problem. Maybe people from MN are not supposed to have sharp knives.Maybe someone could help us Sharpening impaired people from Minnesota!

My advice would be to look into getting a strop of some sort. If you don't want to do that you might try using lighter and lighter pressure on the blade as you get towards the end of sharpening it. It really doesn't take a whole lot of pressure to sharpen on the Sharpmaker. After doing the last few lightpasses, alternating from one side to the other, do a few more with a feather touch in the reverse direction (dragging your blade from the bottom of the V to the top). In my experience you can remove a burr using this method. A good leather strop/strop stick will make it even better though.

Good luck,
Paul

At 100% with Paul - don't hurry, have a patience to pet your edge and you will get amazing sharpness with your Sharpmaker. However some steels are pretty hard to get rid of bur, CPM 440V for example.

Tell me please, is Minnesota any hot state? Maybe people from Minnesota simply are somewhat impatient?

Most Minnesotans -- in popular lore -- are of Swedish heritage. Not sure if that explains anything or not. State motto is, "But we've always done it that way."

No, Minnesota is one of our chillier states -- land of icefishing, etc.

There is this one town tho, supposed to be a really hot town, named Lake Wobegone. A guy gives the weekly news from there on Saturday afternoons on the radio.

Use a clean diamond hone and alternate strokes to minimize burr formation on the high alloy - hard carbides steels. If you are using the Sharpmaker make sure the rods are clean and use the flats not the corners.

Thanks everyone that replied and tried to help with my recent posting. I am going to try some of the different methods.Sergiusz Mitin Minnesota is a very cold State maybe the coldest one in the lower 48.During the cold hard winters we sit a round and sharpen our knives dull

william8 glad I'm not the only one to have problems sharpening it must be something in the water or the cold weather. Thanks again

Hey guys, where can I get some Scotch Brite to clean our 204 with? I've been useing soap and water. RKBA!

Alan2112 any store like Walmart or super market would have scotch brite also use a house hold cleaner like comet on the scotch brite,I use bar keepers friend works well to.

I usually use green Scotch-Brite pads, and Soft Scrub or Bon Ami (whichever is close). Comet works well too (as William8 said). Blue Scotch-Brite pads work OK, but I think the green work better. Just don't let your girlfriend or wife clean your good kitchen knives with the green ones. One of my Murray Carters got cleaned with a green pad!

Oh well, she thought she was doing good. At least she dried it off after washing it.

Believe it or not, SOS pads work pretty well.

It just got scratched lightly in one place. I think she tried to rub some dried food gunk off. She hasn't done it twice though I must say. Of course I took all the green pads and hid them with my knife stuff (for cleaning my ceramic sharpeners).
