Sharpmaker QC

After a long wait (I'm from New Zealand), I finally received my Sharpmaker. Couldn't wait to break it out and get into my drawer of blunt knives. On unpacking it, I was truly dissapointed on finding only one brass safety rod. It isn't a train smash and I will keep using the Sharpmaker without it, but I just wanted to post this as a warning to you guys: When you buy a Sharpmaker, check that all the parts are there.

The storage is nice and compact, but this leads to the brass rods fitting underneath the stones. I think this makes QC on the Sharpmaker tricky - just from opening the lid, it is not obvious that all the parts are there or not. Perhaps mine is just an isolated case, but perhaps the rods can be placed so that they are easily visible when opening the case which would make QC easier?

At any rate - I used it for the first time and got a really blunt knife shaving sharp (good enough for me). Good product.

I picked up my third Sharpmaker from a local gun store not too long ago. I was disappointed to find that the white stones had small "nicks" on the triangular edges. I've been meaning to get in touch with Spyderco and send it back, but havne't had the time yet. Otherwise, the Sharpmaker is an amazing product.

Not an excuse for them not being with yours but I have never used the ones with mine.
Man its hrad to type with just four fingers.

Check the whites under a magnifying glass, whether they are really chips or just dents. The dents you can smooth out by rubbing the whites together. For chips you need to send them back. This is what Mr. Glesser said in a different post.

I'll try that. Thanks.

Ok - some good news. I passed my comments onto the dealer I bought the sharpmaker from and within the week he shipped me a spare brass rod. So, score is now two brass rods and still ten fingers. I am a happy chappy.

Cheers,

Greg

My sharpmaker came with all the proper pieces except that one of the grey/coarse stones was really warped and twisted.

I think that's quite rare to make it out of the factory. I just ended up buying a new stone here in Canada since shipping would have been about the same.

Oh well, I still stand behind their products. Sometimes, sh*t happens :)
