Hi,. I recently got a sharpmaker and it has already paid for itself as I have successfully sharpened all my SAK's and all my kitchen knives. I can't duplicate this success however with the chisel ground blade on my Micra. Suggestions please?

one possible issue.

One of the most overlooked areas in using the Sharpmaker is keeping the rods/stones clean. When sharpening the removal of steel from the blade ends up on the rods/stones. At a certain point you are sharpening against previous blade steel, not the ceramic rod/stone if that make sense at all. Use bar keepers friend, the powered kind, make a slurry of it and scrub the stones clean. BCF contains an acid that acts on the steel on the rods/stones, lifts it away leaving clean ceramic stone/rod left.

Second possible issue.

I would think a chisel grind would be easier than the regular blades as it's a flat edge held on the rod in the horizontal position (you read about doing chisels right?). Reread the chisel sharpening technique or watch the video online, as that might be your issue.

Good luck.

Hi Bryan,

Welcome to our forum.. glad you are enjoying the Sharpmaker.

I think you might be having a burr issue. I would suggest you purchase a loupe, maybe 10X-12X and look at the edge. You will see what's happening.

Hi Sal,

I've never seen a burr magnified before, but I'm thinking that you're right and after watching the video again (Thanks Noah) I have a plan for when I get home from work. Yes rods are clean with Barkeeper's friend.

The sharpmaker rods can be laid into the bottom of the holder and used as a flat stone, correct? I'm thinking that's the side I should be using to remove the burrs by working the flat side FLAT against the stone. I would use the white fine stones, right?

By the way I am enjoying my new Delica and Dragonfly (both VG-10) very much. I live near Boston where there is a 2 1/2 inch blade limit and I would love the opportunity to buy a DF2 ZDP189 with nishijin scales if I could find one.

Thanks so much,

Bryan

I'm looking at my Micra and it looks to me that the angle is steeper than the 30/40 degrees offered by the Sharpmaker.
So my guess is that you're not hitting the apex.

And I've got that Dragonfly you're looking for.;)

And you'd be willing to sell it to me, right? :)

Should I sharpen the Micra with the stones in the horizontal position in the grooves at the bottom of the case or should I try another method?

Thanks

Sure I'll sell it. Turn on your PM's or send me your contact info.

Try the Sharpie method on your Micra to see if your actually hitting the apex while sharpening would be your first step.
And yes, the rods fit flat on the Sharpmaker but you need to contact the apex first to raise a burr on that chisel grind before you need to work the flat and remove it.
