I think the sharpmaker is the best sharpener I have ever tried. I was wondering do most of you use the 40% or 30% angle? Also, I like to use the edges on the rods better than the flats. Good or bad?

I use it to touch up, I actually got rid of it when I got a wicked edge but then got another one because touch ups are difficult on the WE. I use the 40 deg most of the time, and like you I cannot use the flats but only the corners!

By % I suppose you mean degrees °. I haven't actually touched my Sharpmaker since I picked up a WEPS, but I think I'm going to get it set up in a kitchen cabinet or something for my mother so she doesn't have to destroy her knives on a pull-through sharpener after I've taken the time to put good edges on them :D

IIRC the flats remove less metal than the corners do, and since I only use it for light touch ups I only ever used the flats.

In regards to angle, that entirely depends on what the edge angle of the knife I'm sharpening is. Rarely are any of my knives >30° inclusive so I tend to stick to the 30's on the Sharpmaker.

Depends on the knife, and what angle I want on that particular knife.
I also use the corners a good bit, but you do have to be carefull not to pull the tip off of the rod.

I wish Spyderco made a 35 degree adapter that fit into the slots of the Sharpmaker.
Or just make a seperate sharpmaker with a 35.
I know I would buy one.

Dufferent angle adapters would be awesome.

Until then, if you put the stones in the 40* slots and put an elastic band at the top to push the rods closer together, it'll drop it to about 35
